Brunch times!

So for my first formal post here are some great brunch places if you ever have a little craving!

1. The hearty constant - BEAUTY'S

On a Saturday or Sunday, you'll most probably always find a queue outside of this "Montreal staple". Beauty's Luncheonette has been around since God knows how long, and the energetic 80-year-old (or so) owner who still works there everyday is the living proof of the restaurant's success. This family-owned dinner is the epitome of what you would consider a great brunch place to be: it's cozy, full of movement, boast good, hearty food, and good prices. For example, the Super Beauty's 2: $11 for 2 eggs, 2 sausages, 2 nice and crispy bacon strips, 2 fluffy pancakes, 2 slices of toast (or bagel) and a portion of potatoes. Now don't tell me that's not a bargain?! To top it all off the service is great. The food is made fast and the staff is super friendly. You almost feel like you walked into a small town's most popular restaurant, with the owner greeting you at the entrance - you feel special from start to finish. My tip: Try their Oreo milkshake!

Friends' comments: "The best way to start a Sunday morning!" - "I love Beauty's! I love the customer-oriented approach - the fact that the manager comes to show you to your seat".

2. The cozy corner - GRAND MERE POULE

Great ambiance and great food! Here, you feel like you're walking right into your grandmother's kitchen.  The dozens of egg baskets on the ceiling add to the charm of the place - a sly reference to the restaurant's name "Grand-Mère Poule" (= grandmother chicken). It's a great place to relax. As to be expected, their omelets are delicious!

Friends' comments: "Their fruit cocktails are deliciously fresh!" - "Best salmon omelet ever!" - "Very cool ambiance, quick service and very wide selection of offerings. But get there early on a Sunday - you don't always finding seating!"

3. The hip spot - L'AVENUE

This place is probably the most trendy brunch place on Mont-Royal. The queue can last up to an hour, but people will claim their ground and show a significant amount of patience just to get into this place. The restaurant plays on this: club music plays throughout the day, the walls are full of colorful tags, with grungy manikins placed around the room. Even the bathrooms are designed to chock, with mirrors plastering every single wall. Though this brunch place is more expensive, the portions are copious and all delicious. What really makes the difference is the brochettes of fresh fruits that accompany every plate! My tip: try their "fèves au lard", a delicious Quebec specialty that they master very well!

Friends' comments: "I loved the atmosphere at L'Avenue: the food was plentiful and our spirits were high!" - "It's excellent, but the music is too loud!" - "That's where all the cool kids are going! :P"

4. The unexpected breakfast joint - LE RESERVOIR

Though some may know this place for being a local pub/bar, its brunches are delicious. I've only been once but will definitely be a repeat customer in the weekends to come. The food, unlike a lot of other brunch places who aim for the "hearty, home-cooked" feel for their food, is surprisingly sophisticated. Multiple flavors are paired together, making each dish a delight for the palette. Of note especially were the pancakes topped with lime yogurt, caramelized pineapples and pear puree... Nothing more need be said. Moreover, the experience as a whole was very enjoyable. The restaurant boasts large windows that overlook the quaint Duluth street, allowing all the sunlight to pour in, and the waiter was very friendly. I Highly HIGHLY recommend it!

Friend's comment: "An explosion of flavors!"

5. The hidden gem - THE SPARROW/ LE MOINEAU

This trendy place is worth the detour. The refined all-you-can-eat brunch was delicious: fresh fruit and toast with homemade marmalade to start with, followed by a plate filled with tomato, mushrooms, an egg, a small serving of perfectly cooked meat and potatoes, the whole topped of with a plate of blueberry pancakes. In terms of atmosphere this place is much less "crazy" than most brunch restaurants, enticing customers to take their time.

Friends' comment: "Its trendy, classy! The place is well put together and food lives up to the setting." - "Very good food, great value, and pleasant atmosphere. Really tasty marmalade!"
